A critically-acclaimed production, famous not only among the Irish but also around the whole world, Derry Girls is a sitcom telling a tale of five school students living during the time of political conflict – The Troubles.
Written by Lisa McGee, the series is set in 1990s Derry/Londonderry and depicts everyday life, problems and challenges of Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and James (starring Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn), amidst riots, bombs, barricades and constant tension. The perfect balance between comedy and seriousness of the contemporary political situation makes the show really shine and helps to properly establish its lively characters.
The first two seasons of the show were first aired on Irish Channel 4 and then made available on Netflix, with season 3 on the way. The series itself managed to win a number of awards and had a nomination for BAFTA. Its popularity also contributed to the creation of Derry Girls Mural in The Walled City located on Badger’s Bar and Restaurant on Orchard Street, portraying the main cast of the show.
