Greenways of Derry

Greenways can be defined as roads dedicated exclusively for walking or cycling and separated from the city traffic. These paths are usually present in place of old and disused railway networks throughout Northern Ireland. Some of the trails are located within the city of Derry and its nearby areas.

Waterside Greenway follows along the eastern side of River Foyle and is a link between places such as St Columb’s Park, Gransha Wood, Ebrington Square, Waterside station, Peace Bridge and the city centre.

Foyle Valley Greenway, similarly to Waterside, provides a footpath going alongside River Foyle, while at the same time following the line of the former Great Northern Railway into as far as County Donegal. The route consists of 35km in total with the first 8km being completely traffic-free.

Derry Queens Quay Cycleway may not be considered a Greenway by definition, but it provides a great chance to discover the urban areas while riding a bike along the bank of River Foyle. Passing next to Derry District Council, The Guildhall and Peace Bridge, it eventually connects with the Foyle Valley Greenway at the Craigavon Bridge.
